CINCINNATI, Ohio – Four Grenadier starters scored at least 19 points each, including Kerry Smith's 30 points, but IU Southeast fell 111-108 to Cincinnati Christian on Saturday to conclude the regular season.
Kerry Smith had a game-high 30 points in the loss. Jamie Johnson had 24 points and 12 assists, Lukas Burkman had 21 points and David Burton added 19 points.
IU Southeast (19-11, 12-6 RSC) fell behind 21-10 to start the contest as the CCU offense was almost unstoppable throughout the game. The Eagles (15-15, 9-9 RSC) shot 50 percent from the field in the first half and then improved to 60 percent from the field and also three-point range in the second half. Six Eagles scored in double-figures led by Blake Walsman who had 28 points and 18 rebouds.
The Grenadiers were able to keep up with the CCU attack in the first half and trailed 48-41 at halftime.
In the second half, the hot shooting Eagles pulled away by as many as 15 points but a three-pointer by Lukas Burkman cut the lead to 92-88 with four minutes to play. The Eagles responded with an 8-2 run that looked to put the game away.
But IU Southeast wouldn't go away. After Kerry Smith got a steal and a layup with 1.7 seconds to play to cut the lead to 111-108, the Grenadiers could not ge the ball back for a desperation three to tie the game and CCU escaped with the win.
IU Southeast will travel to IU East for the quarterfinals of the 2019 River States Conference Men's Basketball Championship on Wednesday. Game times and a bracket will be released by the conference later on Saturday.
