GEORGETOWN, Ky. – The IU Southeast softball team defeated Georgetown 5-4 in eight innings and 5-3 on Tuesday.
In game one, the Grenadiers took a 2-0 lead with runs in the first two innings. Kelsey Warman walked, advanced to second on a single and scored on an error by leftfielder Peyton Beger to open the scoring.
In the second inning, Dallas Henderson singled to center to score Maddie Probus who had reached on a walk and advanced on a sacrifice bunt.
The Tigers (0-2) tied the contest in the bottom of the fourth when Beger and Abigail James had RBI singles.
The Grenadiers took the lead right back in the top of the fifth when Graci Cornett came on to pinch hit and hit a two-run home run to left for her first collegiate home run.
Peyton Beger cut the lead to one with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the sixth. Then the Tigers tied the game in bottom of the seventh when Hannah Howes drew a walk, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Then Allison Watson hit a sacrifice fly to right to tie the game.
The Grenadiers took the lead for good in the top of the eighth with the international tiebreaker in effect. Maggie Lubbehusen singled up the middle to score Kaitlyn Flowers.
With one out and a runner at third in the bottom of the inning, Brooklyn Gibbs got a groundout back to the pitcher and a groundout to second to secure the win.
Maggie Lubbehsuen went 3-for-4 with an RBI in the win.
In game two, the Grenadiers jumped out to a 5-0 lead. In the top of the first inning Gibbs led off with a tiple and scored on a sac fly from Flowers.
IU Southeast added on a pair of runs in the fifth when Gibbs connected on a two-run home run to left for her first collegiate home run.
The Grenadiers added two needed insurance run in the top of the seventh. Sami Cook reached on a walk and then Katie Cook bunted for a hit. A RBI groundout from Allison Hayes brought in Sami Cook and a wild pitch scored Katie Cook.
Starter Brooklyn Gibbs had a shutout for six and a third innings but the Tigers struck for three runs to get back in the game. With the tying run at the plate, Hannah Ogg got Beger to pop out to third to end the game.
Gibbs allowed three runs on four hits, walked five and struck out two. She also went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. Hannah Ogg recorded her first save.
The Grenadiers travel to Kentucky Christian Saturday.
