HUNTINGTON, Ind. – The IU Southeast women's basketball team fell to No. 7 University of the Cumberlands 97-64 on Saturday.
Cumberlands dominated the first quarter, beginning the game on a 19-0 run. IU Southeast scored their first basket with 5:28 left in the quarter, a three by
Carley Higgins.
Lexi Starr scored the other four points of the quarter for IU Southeast as the Grenadiers trailed 32-7 after one.
IU Southeast scored eight points in the first three minutes of the second quarter, but still trailed 37-15. Cumberlands extended their lead to 30 at 49-19 with 3:08 left in the half. Cumberlands led 58-29 at halftime.
Cumberlands opened the third quarter on a 15-3 run to extend their lead to 73-32. Cumberlands led 81-45 after three quarters.
IU Southeast outscored Cumberlands 19-16 in the fourth quarter, but the Patriots would go on to win 97-64.
"I liked how we battled today," IU Southeast interim head coach Derek Sims said. "However, Cumberlands is a really good team. If you're going to beat a team like that, or at least have a chance to, you have to bring it the entire game. I'm proud of our effort and competitiveness, and we got better."
Grace Stapleton led IU Southeast with 14 points and four rebounds.
Lexi Starr scored 10 points, and
Carley Higgins added nine points off the bench.
Taylor Treat had nine points and a team-high six assists off the bench. 13 of IU Southeast's 21 made field goals were three-pointers.
IU Southeast returns to action for the home opener against Simmons College on Wednesday.
