PORTSMOUTH, Ohio – The IU Southeast women's basketball team fell to (RV) Shawnee State 79-52 on Saturday.
IU Southeast took a 5-4 lead on a
Grace Stapleton three early in the first quarter. The Grenadiers led 8-6, but a three by Shawnee State gave the Bears a 9-8 lead.
A free throw and a jumper by
Jesse Ledgerwood gave the Grenadiers an 11-8 advantage, but a three by Shawnee State tied the game at 11-11. Shawnee State led 13-11 at the end of the first quarter.
A three by
Linzie Wernert to open the second quarter gave IU Southeast a 14-13 lead. With the score tied at 17-17, another three by
Linzie Wernert put the Grenadiers ahead 20-17.
IU Southeast was held scoreless for the next six minutes as Shawnee State used a 14-0 run to take a 31-20 lead. The Bears would go into halftime with a 35-23 edge.
Shawnee State extended their lead to as many as 22 in the third quarter. IU Southeast was able to cut the lead to 15 near the end of the third, but the Bears led 55-37 headed into the fourth quarter.
Shawnee State outscored IU Southeast 24-15 in the fourth en route to a 79-52 win.
"I thought we had a good game plan, and we executed in the first quarter," IU Southeast interim head coach Derek Sims said. "From there, I can go on and on as to what went wrong. We 100 percent got away from the plan. We also played fearful, and I talk about being fearless. We are going to learn from our mistakes, build on any positives and let this situation make us better."
Grace Stapleton led IU Southeast with 18 points. Stapleton added four rebounds and tied for the team lead with three assists.
Linzie Wernert had another double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds.
Jesse Ledgerwood had eight points and tied for the team-high with three assists.
Lexi Starr also had three assists.
Shawnee State capitalized on Grenadier turnovers, scoring 26 points off 22 giveaways.
IU Southeast (9-9 overall, 3-5 RSC) looks to rebound in a home conference contest against IU East on Thursday.
