CHILLICOTHE, Ohio – The 18
th ranked IU Southeast baseball team fell to Midway 13-12 in an elimination game in the RSC Tournament.
The two teams were supposed to play Friday night, but due to weather, the game was moved to Saturday morning.
A steady shower greeted the teams on Saturday at first pitch. Midway scored five runs in the first and four runs in the second to take a 9-0 lead.
IU Southeast got on the board in the second, using an RBI infield single to make it 9-1.
Grant Shepherd was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it 9-2, and a bases-loaded walk to
Nolan Bowser made it 9-3.
Logan Beard followed with a two-run double to make it 9-5. A sacrifice fly by
Hazel Martinez followed by an RBI single by
Preston Shelton made the game 9-7.
The teams made it through two innings, but the rain was too much. The game was suspended until Sunday morning with Midway leading 9-7.
As the game resumed action on Sunday, so did the scoring. Midway scored four runs in the fifth to take a 13-7 lead.
An RBI single by
Preston Shelton in the sixth made it 13-8. Another run came around to score on a double play in the seventh to shrink the Midway lead to 13-9.
A solo home run by
Logan Beard in the eighth made it 13-10. IU Southeast loaded the bases in the ninth, and a two-RBI single by
Logan Beard made it 13-12.
Hazel Martinez was intentionally walked, and Midway induced a groundout to end the game and secure a 13-12 win to eliminate the Grenadiers.
Logan Beard led IU Southeast with three hits, including a double and a home run, and five RBI.
Preston Shelton also doubled.
Jack Ellis stole a base.
Luca Sandrella got the start, pitching just one inning in the rain.
Zak Rasener came in and threw the second inning.
Conner Christopher V is credited with an appearance, though he never actually threw a pitch due to the game being suspended.
Brendan Whalen threw three innings to open the day on Sunday, allowing four runs.
Luke Shelton,
Nick Pazos,
Aiden Darlage, and
Daly Skees all threw scoreless innings in relief.
No. 18 IU Southeast falls to 30-16 on the season. The Grenadiers will be watching the NAIA Selection Show on Wednesday to find out if they will be playing in the NAIA Opening Round.
