MIDWAY, Ky. - IU Southeast fell 4-3 to Midway in their River States Conference opener Friday afternoon.
Midway's Alicia Sanglas Sanglas and Emma Pheiffer edged out IU Southeast's Libby Banet and Kate Halbig 7-6, 7-5. The Eagles secured the doubles team point after Raigan Allbert and Tanit Cevada Cruz narrowly defeated Maci Vaughn and Eva Ellis 7-5. Anellah Trujillo and Elana Hamby would win one for IU Southeast, defeating Haley Thompson and Caitlin Wright 6-4.
In the singles matches, Sanglas Sanglas gave the Eagles a 2-0 match lead after a 6-2, 6-1 win over Banet. Pheiffer won the first set over Vaughn 6-4, but Vaughn came back and won set two 6-4. Pheiffer would go on to secure the team point after taking set three 6-2.
Midway secured the match after Cevada Cruz edged out Halbig 7-5, 6-3. IU Southeast would win the next three matches. Ellis won 6-4, 6-3 over Thompson, Hamby defeated Allbert 6-3, 6-4, and Trujillo finished off the match with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Wright. The Eagles took the match with a final score of 4-3.
The Grenadiers are 6-2 (0-1 RSC) following Friday's result. IU Southeast will be back in action on March 28th for a 1:00 p.m. home match against Shawnee State.
