OAKLAND CITY, Ind. - IU Southeast won their third RSC conference series over Oakland City after splitting Saturday's doubleheader against the Mighty Oaks.
The Grenadiers are 17-8 overall and 8-1 in conference following this weekend's series victory over OCU. IU Southeast will be back home next Friday for game one of a three-game RSC series against Shawnee State.
Game 1: IU Southeast 13, Oakland City 3 (8 innings)
Trevor Goodwin opened the scoring with a double to the gap in left to score Kevin Moore in the game's opening frame. IU Southeast would make the Mighty Oaks pay for a fielding error after Goodwin scored one play later.
The Grenadiers doubled their lead in the second. With two outs and no one on base, Moore drew a walk and then advanced to third after Goodwin singled to right. A wild pitch would score Moore, and then a single by Bryson Arnette would score Goodwin to make it 4-0.
OCU plated one run in the bottom of the second, and the Grenadiers countered with one in the top of the third. Caden Lockwood made it 5-1 after hitting a solo home run over the fence in right field. One inning later, Goodwin recorded his third hit of the game with a solo home run to left center.
Lockwood would score IU Southeast's seventh run of the game in the fifth after a throwing error. The Grenadiers continued to pour it on the Mighty Oaks in the next inning. Coulter Hamilton hit a two-run home run to extend the Grenadiers' lead to 9-1.
The Might Oaks scored two in the sixth to cut the lead to 9-3. In the seventh, the Grenadiers made OCU pay for an error yet again. Lockwood led off the inning by reaching base via a fielding error and would later score.
IU Southeast would end the game in the eighth. Goodwin reached base via error, then scored after a single by Konnor Scheidt. Lockwood would put the Grenadiers up ten to finish the run-rule with a two-run homer. The Grenadiers would win 13-3 and clinched the series victory.
Game 2: Oakland City 2, IU Southeast 0
The Mighty Oaks took advantage of an early IU Southeast fielding error. OCU's Simon Gaines reached base via an E-6, then advanced to second. Gaines advanced to third after a single by teammate Marcos Arocho, then scored one at-bat later.
OCU tacked on another run in the fourth and held that lead throughout the rest of the game. IU Southeast would make things interesting in the game's final frame. Hamilton got the rally started after reaching via an E-4, then advanced to second after a single by Alex Schuler.
With two on and one out, Scheidt drew a walk to load the bases. Despite the late push, the Grenadiers were unable to score, and the Might Oaks would win 2-0.
