Grenadiers Escape Frankfort With 80-77 Win

Frankfort, Ky. – The No. 6 IU Southeast men's basketball team was down by as many as 13 with 9:30 left in the game but forced overtime and pulled out an 80-77 win over IU Southeast alum Antwain Banks's Kentucky State Thorobreds.

IU Southeast (2-2) opened the game on a 9-0 run and KSU did not score until the 13:17 mark of the first half. After that, the Thorobreds went on a 20-4 run to take the lead. At halftime, KSU led 28-23.

IU Southeast shot just 23 percent in the first half and two of eleven from three-point range.

The Grenadiers hung around in the second half before Jake Simpson tied the game at 65 on a layup with 4:30 to play.

Cameron Mitchell scored on a drive to the basket to give IU Southeast the lead at 72-71 with 16.4 seconds to play. Kegan Clark fouled out after committing a blocking four but KSU's Tryston Ford could only make one of two shots and sent the game to overtime.

IU Southeast jumped out to a five point lead early in overtime after Jake Simpson hit a three to open the scoring in the extra session and Cameron Mitchell added a layup.

Cameron Mitchell got another layup to go to seal the game for IU Southeast. KSU missed two desperation three-pointers and IU Southeast escaped with the win.

Four Grenadiers scored in double-figures. Cameron Mitchell had a game-high 19 points and 12 rebounds, Kegan Clark added 15 points, Kevin Mitchell had 14 and Parker Henes had 10 points and five rebounds.

Patrick Dawson had 18 points for Kentucky State, who dropped to 0-2.

The Grenadiers shot 38 percent from the field for the game and just 5 of 24 (21 percent) from three-point range.

IU Southeast hosts Mid-Continent on Saturday at 5 p.m.
