Grenadiers Push Win Streak To 12 Games, Sweep Berea

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast softball team swept Berea on Tuesday, extending its winning streak to 12 games.

The Grenadiers (18-7, 9-1 KIAC) used a seven-run fourth inning to get the win in game one. With the bases loaded and one out, Katelyn Heines doubled to left to score Haley-Ann Kueneman and Chelsey Frith. Cadie Povaleri singled to score Summer Sanders who had walked. Heines and Povaleri advanced on a double steal and scored on Morgan Klosterman's single. Klosterman scored after being awarded home after obstruction was called on the catcher Raissa Stovall. Shelby Lucas would single, advance to second and score on Brookelyn Visker's single.

Jenna Swain (4-3) pitched a complete game. She gave up three runs while striking out five and walked three.

Heines went one-for-three with two RBI and scored two runs.

In game two, the Grenadiers trailed 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning, but the deficit was short-lived. Chelsey Frith tripled to lead off the inning and scored on Jordan Batliner's single.

The game remained tied until the bottom of fourth. Darcy Sapp singled to lead off the inning and Lauren Klosterman pinch ran for her. Leah Podgorny bunted and reached on an error by the first baseman. Sanders singled to center to score Kueneman and Klosterman scored. Brooke Barnett had an infield hit which scored Podgorny. Sanders stole third and scored on a ground out by Frith.

Jessica Leanhart (8-2) gave up a two-run home run to Kari Kviten to cut the lead to 4-3 but Madison Ray worked an inning and a third to pick up her second save of the season.

Leanhart went five and two-thirds, and gave up three runs on five hits. She struck out four and walked a batter.

IU Southeast travels to Asbury University on Friday for a 5 p.m. doubleheader.
