NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The Grenadier softball team trailed to begin both games in Sunday's doubleheader against Alice Lloyd but put big innings on the board to get past the Eagles and sweep the KIAC doubleheader.
In game one, Jessica Leanhart gave up a leadoff home run to Megan Jones. The Grenadiers (9-1, 6-0 KIAC) responded in the bottom of the inning as Summer Sanders and Morgan Klosterman hit back-to-back singles. They scored on an error by second baseman Morgan Albury.
IU Southeast tacked on three more runs in the third. Shelby Lucas had an RBI single, she later scored on a fielder's choice. Alyssa Price walked and later scored on a Lauren Klosterman's sacrifice fly.
In the fifth, Katelyn Heines singled and stole second and then scored after a wild throw by Tabitha Potter. Sanders hit a sacrifice fly to right to bring in Barnett. Later, Price reached on an error and Morgan Klosterman scored and Visker hit an RBI single.
Morgan Klosterman went 3-for-4 and scored three runs. Shelby Lucas had two hits and knocked in three.
Leanhart gave up two solo home runs in the game. She worked five innings, struck out 10 and walked two.
In game two, Tori Price hit a two-run home run to open the scoring for Alice Lloyd.
The Grenadiers scored three runs in the third to take the lead. After Price and Montanah Rogers singled, Morgan Klosterman singled to left to score both runners. Delaney Arnold doubled to score Klosterman.
IU Southeast put the game away in the fifth by scoring seven runs in the frame. The inning was highlighted by Katelyn Heines hitting her second inside-the-park home run in as many days. This time it brought in three runs.
Caroline Cato picked up her fourth win. She worked all five innings, giving up two runs on four hits. She walked three and struck out one.
The Grenadiers host Spalding University on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
