NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast softball team split a doubleheader with St. Mary-of-the-Woods on Monday. The Grenadiers dropped game one 11-10 and won game two 8-7.
In game one, Jessica Leanhart gave up two three-run home runs, one in the first and one in the seventh. The Grenadiers battled back to tie the game twice, before falling a run short in the ninth.
Shelby Lucas and Morgan Klosterman each had three RBI in the loss.
Leanhart (7-1) worked six and two-thirds, surrendering 11 runs on 11 hits. She walked six and struck out six.
In game two, the Grenadiers trailed 4-1 as they batted in the bottom of the fourth. Back-to-back doubles by Shelby Lucas and Brookelyn Visker. Summer Sanders singled to score Visker and the Grenadiers cut the lead to one.
IU Southeast (12-2) led for the first time in the bottom of the fifth. They struck for three runs and were sparked by Lucas's run-scoring triple which scored Delany Arnold who had singled. Montanah Rogers hit a sacrifice fly to left which scored Lucas. Later, Sanders singled to bring in Visker who had reached on a walk.
The lead was short-lived as the Pomeroys picked up two runs to tie it in the sixth. Kimberly Strattman reached on a fielder's choice and then later scored on a throwing error by Lauren Klosterman. Emma Riffe sinlged to bring in Kerri Schrock to tie the game.
In the bottom of the inning, Katelyn Heines reached second on a throwing error and moved to third on Morgan Klosterman's sacrifice bunt. Arnold singled to bring in Heines.
IU Southeast could not seal the game in the seventh due to more defensive lapses. After Jacklyn McClain singled, starter Caroline Cato was replaced by Leanhart. The next batter, Shelby Turner, reached base on Brookelyn Visker's wild throw and McClain scored.
The Grenadiers did not waste time in the bottom of the inning and got a baserunner right away as Visker singled to center. Rogers moved her to second on a sacrifice bunt and she advanced to third on a passed ball. Sanders hit a sacrifice fly to left and Visker scored easily to win it.
Sanders went a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI in the win.
Leanhart got the win in her one inning of relief. Cato worked six innings, and gave up eight hits and seven runs. She struck out one, walked three and hit three batters.
The Grenadiers visit Midway College Tuesday at 3 p.m.
