FORT WAYNE, Ind. – After suffering their first loss since September 8 on Friday, the IU Southeast volleyball team dropped just one set against Shawnee State and Calumet College of St. Joseph Saturday.
The Grenadiers (19-7) opened the day by defeating Shawnee State 25-17, 25-18, 28-30, 25-17.
Six Grenadiers had at least seven kills in the match. Monica Loftus led IU Southeast with 15 kills and Katie Fischer added 11.
Hannah Barker had 50 assists and 13 digs. Natalie Keene led the Grenadiers with 19 digs and Loftus chipped in with 18 as she continued her strong all-around play.
The Grenadiers and Bears were tied at 13 in the first set before IU Southeast went on a 12-4 run to win the first set.
IU Southeast maintained a comfortable advantage throughout the second set and jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a 25-18 win.
After dropping a tight third set, IU Southeast responded by pulling away in the fourth. With the Grenadiers leading 18-16, IU Southeast scored seven out of the last eight points in the match to get the victory.
Lauren Helbig had 15 kills to lead Shawnee State, who dropped to 4-21.
IU Southeast rounded out the Indiana Tech tournament with a sweep of Calumet College of St. Joseph.
The Grenadiers trailed 5-1 to open the match but responded after a timeout to go on a 24-9 run to take the first set.
The second set was close throughout with six ties and one lead change but the Grenadiers were able to pull out the set and then never tied or trailed in the third set for the sweep.
Monica Loftus had nine kills and four aces and Maddie Jacobi had a season-high eight kills for IU Southeast. Mary Dye and Katie Fischer each had seven kills.
IU Southeast completed the tournament with a 3-1 record.
The Grenadiers return home to host Asbury University in a key River States Conference clash Tuesday at 7 p.m.
