Grenadiers Open Conference Play With Sweep of Ohio Christian

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast softball team used two solid pitching performances and timely hitting to open conference play with a sweep of Ohio Christian Friday afternoon, winning game one 7-1 and game two 3-2.

In game one, the Grenadiers used a four-run third inning to take the lead. After Brooke Barnett and Becca Schoenung opened the inning with back-to-back singles, Montanah Rogers hit a sacrifice fly to left-center to bring in Barnett. Sydney Seger hit one of her two doubles in the game to right which scored Schoenung. After a Brookelyn Visker single, Tatum Oppenhuis hit a two-run single to make it 4-1.

The Grenadiers (9-10, 2-0 KIAC) would add two more runs in the fourth. Barnett reached on an infield single and scored on Schoenung's RBI double. Rogers singled, stole second and scored on a Seger double.

Caroline Cato gave up a run on one hit in five innings of work. She walked three and struck out five to get her third win of the season. Sydney Seger went 4-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI and a run scored while Becca Schoenung, Brooke Barnett and Brookelyn Visker each had two hits.

In game two, the Grenadiers fell behind once again after Leandra Griffin led off the game with a home run to left center.

IU Southeast tied it in the second when Barnett hit a sacrifice fly to center to bring in Oppenhuis who had reached on a single.

The Grenadiers took the lead for good in the third when they capitalized on an error. Brookelyn Visker singled and scored on a dropped fly by rightfielder Rian Montavon. Sydney Seger reached third on the error and scored after Justice Kline got a sacrifice bunt down.

That was enough offense in support of starter Emily Weiss who gave up two runs on six hits and struck out five in seven innings.

Becca Schoenung had half of the Grenadiers' six hits in the game as she went 3-for-3 in the win.

The Grenadiers host Rio Grande Saturday at 11 a.m.
