Grenadiers Split Doubleheader With Rio Grande

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast softball team split a Saturday doubleheader with Rio Grande, winning game one 5-2 and losing game two 6-2.

Game one was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when IU Southeast opened the inning with back-to-back singles by Sydney Seger and Justice Kline. Montanah Rogers singled to left to score Seger and Kline was able to score when the ball was bobbled in the outfield.

The Grenadiers (10-11, 3-1 KIAC) tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Hannah Veit singled to right to score Kline and Rogers and Morgan Keefer followed with an RBI triple to left to bring in Veit.

The RedStorm scored two runs in the top of the seventh off of starter Emily Weiss who went the distance. She gave up two runs on six hits and struck out three.

Seger, Kline and Keefer each had two hits in the win and Veit had two RBI.

In game two, the Grenadiers trailed 3-0 before cutting the lead to one in the bottom of the fifth after a couple of errors by the Rio Grande defense.

Brooke Barnet scored from third after third baseman Gaby Gregg misplayed a ground ball off the bat of Seger and Brookelyn Visker scored after a wild throw to first from pitcher Jenna Jones.

Brooke Barnett had two of the team's five hits as the Grenadier offense could not get on track against Rio Grande starter Jenna Jones.

IU Southeast hosts Taylor University on March 22 and 23.
