NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast softball team needed two late-inning rallies to sweep Taylor University on Tuesday.
In game one, Brookelyn Visker tied the game 1-1 with an RBI double to left-center in the first inning. She became the Grenadiers' leader in total hits (165) and doubles (37) with that base hit.
The Grenadiers (12-11) scored a pair of runs each in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 5-2 lead. In the fourth, Hannah Veit tripled to left-center to score Montanah Rogers and Justice Kline. In the fifth, Becca Schoenung and Brooke Barnett scored off of an error by shortstop Jessie Britt.
The Trojans would respond with four runs in the top of the sixth to take a 6-5 lead. After Caroline Cato left with the bases loaded and one out, Morgan Keefer came on and a wild pitch brought in a run. That was followed by three-straight RBI singles.
In the bottom of the inning, Hannah Veit walked and Keefer was hit by a pitch and Schoenung drew a walk to load the bases. Brooke Barnett hit a ground ball to second, the throw home was in time but Lauren Ehle's foot was off the plate so Veit scored. A two-run single by Sydney Segar gave the Grenadiers an 8-6 lead.
The Trojans would get a run across in the seventh but Becca Schoenung was able to shut the door to earn her first save. Morgan Keefer earned her first collegiate win in relief. Keefer worked a third of an inning and gave up one run on three hits.
Brooke Barnett went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI. Hannah Veit went 2-for-2 with two RBI a run scored and a walk.
In game two, IU Southeast got on the board first when Seger singled to center to bring in Barnett. Taylor would respond to take a 4-2 lead as the Grenadiers headed to bat in the bottom of the seventh.
Montanah Rogers and Justice Kline opened the inning with back-to-back singles and Morgan Keefer singled to center and Rogers scored on the bobble by centerfielder Alex Lovelace which allowed Keefer and Kline to move to second and third, respectively. Hannah Veit followed with a single to bring in Kline and tie the game. Brookelyn Visker would end the game with a fly ball to left that was dropped which allowed Sidney Chumbler to score the winning run.
Morgan Keefer picked up her second win of the day in relief of starter Caroline Cato. She worked an inning and gave up one hit.
Sidney Seger went 2-for-3 with an RBI in the win.
The Grenadiers host conference rival Brescia Friday at 2 p.m.
