NEW ALBANY, Ind. – Freshman pitcher Emily Weiss was dominant, allowing five hits combined in two starts on Friday as the IU Southeast softball team swept Brescia 10-0 in five innings and 5-0.
In game one, the Grenadiers opened the scoring with two runs in the first. Brooke Barnett walked, Brookelyn Visker reached on a dropped fly ball in center and Barnett scored. A RBI single by Montanah Rogers brought in Visker.
The Grenadiers (14-11, 5-1 KIAC) would strike for four runs in the bottom of the second. Becca Schoenung singled and after a misplay by centerfielder Alexa Nicholas, Tatum Oppenhuis was able to advance to third and then score safely. Brookelyn Visker followed with a sac fly and Sydney Seger hit a two-run double to left.
In the third, Morgan Keefer led off with a single and scored on a double by Oppenhuis. That was followed by Hannah Veit's triple to left-center to make it 8-0.
The Grenadiers would tack on two more in the fourth. Back-to-back singles by Brooke Barnett and Visker led off the inning and Rogers hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Barnett. Oppenhuis hit a sac fly to bring in Visker.
Emily Weiss, the reigning KIAC Pitcher of the Week, worked four innings and allowed one hit and struck out one.
Oppenhuis went 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored. Every Grenadier starter had at least one hit in the game.
In game two, the Grenadiers opened the game with a four-run first inning. Schoenung walked, advanced on passed ball and then stole third and scored on a ground ball to second by Barnett. Singles by Visker and Seger followed and Visker was able to score from second. A single by Rogers followed and Justice Kline followed with a two-run single to bring in Seger and Rogers.
Rogers would hit her second home run of the season to center in the sixth inning to make it 5-0.
That was enough for Weiss who worked a complete-game shutout, allowing four hits and a walk while striking out four.
Seger and Rogers each went 2-for-3 with an RBI in the win.
The Grenadiers travel to Spalding University on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
