Box Score 3 NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast softball team put together 20 hits combined in two games against Union Tuesday, which led to 5-4 and 8-2 wins over the Bulldogs.
In game one, Union struck in the top of the first. Kayla Frazier singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch by starter Becca Schoenung. A single by Tiffanie Moore put the Bulldogs on the board.
The Grenadiers (4-8) responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second. After singles by Montanah Rogers and Brooke Barnett, Hannah Veit reached base on a bunt single. Caroline Cato singled to bring in Rogers and Barnett to give the Grenadiers the lead.
IU Southeast would add two more runs in the fifth. After Morgan Keefer singled and Brookelyn Visker doubled, Tatum Oppenhuis hit a two-run double to clear the bases and make it 4-1.
The Bulldogs would tie the game in the top of the sixth. First, Moore singled to center and advanced to second on a passed ball. After a walk to Danielle Borum, pinch hitter Mandy Head doubled to right to score two. Andrea Foster doubled to left to tie the game.
In the bottom of the inning, Justice Kline led off with a single and advanced to second on bunt single by Brooke Barnett. After Hannah Veit helped both runners advance with a sacrifice bunt, Caroline Cato grounded out to the pitcher and Kline scored.
The Bulldogs did not go quietly. Bridget Bass led off the seventh with a triple, but Cato retired the next three batters in order to seal the game.
Cato worked one and a third innings in relief of Schoenung. Cato gave up two hits and struck out a batter to earn her second win of the year.
In game two, the Grenadiers struck in the bottom of the first. After Visker walked, Seger reached base on a fielder's choice and stole second. Tatum Oppenhuis hit a two-run single to center to open the scoring.
The Grenadiers broke the game open in the fourth. Brookelyn Visker hit a two-run double to bring in Hannah Veit and Justice Kline. Then Schoenung singled to score Visker.
Visker scored two runs and had three RBI and Tatum Oppenhuis added two RBI in the win. Oppenhuis, Kline, Schoenung and Veit each had two hits as the Grenadiers had 11 hits in the game.
Emily Weiss got the win. She worked six and two-thirds and gave up three hits and one run. She struck out four and walked one.
The Grenadiers travel to Hanover tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.
