NEW ALBANY, Ind. – On a day when fireworks filled the sky over the Ohio River, the IU Southeast bats lit up Cincinnati Christian 9-1 and 25-1.
IU Southeast (30-11, 21-1 KIAC) opened the first game of the day with a four-run first inning. Logan Coughlin had a two-run single to right to put the first runs of the day on the board.
The Grenadiers added four more runs in the fourth. Matt Volz hit a leadoff double and Kyle Asher followed with an RBI triple. Coughlin added another RBI single to bring in Asher and the Grenadiers would later tack on two more runs on a bases loaded walk and fielder's choice.
Ty Simpson got the win in four hitless inning of work. He walked two and struck out one. Matt Volz and Logan Coughlin each went 2-for-3 in the win.
In game two, IU Southeast led 5-0 after three innings and broke the game open with an eight-run fourth and nine-run fifth inning.
Wes Walker hit his second home run of the season in the fifth, a three-run shot to left.
The Grenadiers set season highs for runs scored (25), hits (21), doubles (6) and triples (3). Every Grenadier position player had a hit, and seven Grenadiers had multi-hit games.
The Eagles did not record a hit until the sixth inning.
Logan Barnes went 3-for-5 with four runs scored and four RBI. Coughlin added four more RBI with a 2-for-3 outing.
Brian Cherrington got the win. He worked four hitless innings and struck out seven while walking three.
IU Southeast concludes the series with CCU on Monday at 4 p.m.
