Grenadier Bats Come Alive as IU Southeast Sweeps Oakland City

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast softball team pounded out 13 hits apiece in each game of their doubleheader sweep of Oakland City Thursday. They defeated the Lady Oaks 9-1 and 9-3.

In game one, the Grenadiers trailed 1-0 until they used an 8-run third inning to take the lead for good.

Sydney Seger opened the scoring with a three-run double with the bases loaded. Brookelyn Visker followed with a triple to bring in Seger. Montanah Rogers followed with an RBI single and she scored on a triple from Tatum Oppenhuis.

Later in the inning, Justice Kline singled to bring in Oppenhuis but Kline was out advancing. Hannah Veit followed with a solo home run to left, her second of the year to cap off the eight-run third inning.

The Grenadiers sent 10 batters to the plate in the inning.

Caroline Cato worked all five innings, giving up four hits and one run while walking four and striking out two.

Becca Schoenung and Brooke Barnett each went 3-for-4 with a run scored. Hannah Veit went 2-for=2 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Sydney Seger had three RBI in game one.

In game two, Brookelyn Visker gave the Grenadiers the lead with a two-run double left. Montanah Rogers followed with an RBI single to bring in Visker to make it 3-1 IU Southeast after one inning.

The Grenadiers would a pair of runs in each of the second, third and fifth innings.

In the second, Sidney Chumbler singled and advanced to second on a bunt base hit by Barnett. Seger singled to bring in Chumber and Barnett scored when Visker reached base on a misplayed grounder by second baseman Bailey Gilbert.

In the third, a two-run home run to center by Tatum Oppenhuis pushed the Grenadier lead to 7-2.

In the fifth, back-to-back singles by Morgan Keefer and Oppenhuis put runners at first and third to start the inning. A single by Veit scored Keefer and Oppenhuis later scored on a RBI groundout by Chumbler.

Emily Weiss worked five innings for her 13th win. She gave up four hits and two runs with four strikeouts and a walk.

Barnett went 3-for-4 with two runs scored while Montanah Rogers and Tatum Oppenhuis each had two hits.

IU Southeast hosts Kentucky Christian Friday at 3 p.m.
