Grenadiers Open RSC Play With Thrilling Five-Set Win Over Asbury

WILMORE, Ky. – The IU Southeast volleyball team played the first River States Conference game in school history on Tuesday, and made sure it was memorable with a five-set win over Asbury.

IU Southeast (6-6, 1-0 RSC) won the first set 25-20, scoring five of the final six points of the set to pull away.

The Grenadiers dropped the second set 25-18 before rebounding with a convincing 25-15 win in the third set. They could not put the match away in the fourth as Asbury answered with a 25-15 win to force a deciding fifth set.

Not surprisingly, neither team could pull away in the final frame. Both teams led by no more than two points in the set.

Asbury (2-9, 0-1 RSC) fought off three match points in the fifth set before taking the lead 17-16 and forcing a match point of their own. Katie Fischer tied it with her 14th kill, a career high, and Monica Loftus and Hannah Barker followed with back-to-back kills to win it for the Grenadiers.

Hannah Joly led the Grenadiers with 19 kills, one shy of tying her career high, Fischer followed with 14 and Mary Dye added 13 kills. Hannah Barker had a season-high 51 assists.

Madeline Morris kept the Eagles alive in the fifth set with her strong play. She led Asbury with 17 kills. Kayla Morian added 15 and Ashlee Rose had 11.

The Grenadiers host Oakland City Thursday at 7 p.m.
