Grenadiers Drop Five-Set Thriller To IU Kokomo on Senior Night

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – A valiant comeback from the IU Southeast volleyball team fell short as the Grenadiers fell in five sets to IU Kokomo on Senior Night. The Cougars extended their winning streak to 17-straight matches.

IU Kokomo (23-8, 11-0 RSC) defeated IU Southeast 25-20, 25-23, 25-27, 20-25, 15-9.

Alexis Bassett had a season-high 17 kills to lead the Grenadiers. Monica Loftus had 14 kills and Parker Andres added 11. Senior Kelsey Willinger had 13 kills in her final home contest.

Fellow senior, defensive specialist Caitlynn Pfaadt had seven digs in her final home appearance.

In the first set, IU Southeast led 12-10 before the Cougars used a quick 6-0 run to take a lead that they did not relinquish.

IU Southeast (17-15, 11-3 RSC) trailed 17-10 in the second set before tightening the set with a 7-1 run. The Cougars responded by scoring seven of the final 13 points to take a commanding two-set lead.

In the third set, IU Southeast trailed 15-13 before Loftus and Willinger sparked a rally. The duo combined to score eight of the Grenadiers final 14 points in the set.

The Grenadiers jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the fourth set and kept the Cougars at a comfortable distance throughout the frame to force a deciding fifth set.

The fifth set was tied at eight and then the Cougars clinched the match with a decisive 7-1 run.

The Grenadiers travel to Oakland City Thursday at 8 p.m.
