NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast softball team opened conference play Thursday by splitting a doubleheader with Asbury. IU Southeast dropped game one 8-3 before rebounding with an 8-0 win game two.
Asbury (4-8, 1-1 RSC) opened the day with a six-run first inning to chase starter Bailey Sharp after a third of an inning.
IU Southeast (6-10, 1-1 RSC) scored a run in the fourth and two runs in the fifth but the deficit was too much to overcome.
Starting pitcher Deana Phillips hit a two-run home to left-center in the fourth to seal the game for the Eagles.
In game two, the Grenadiers jumped out to an early lead.
In the top of the first, Becca Schoenung singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Sydney Seger brought her in to score on an RBI single.
IU Southeast added three more runs in the following inning. After Emily Gray singled, Maddie Probus followed with a RBI double to score Gray. Later, Morgan Keefer grounded out to second to score Kaylin Klosterman who had walked. Becca Schoenung followed with a sacrifice fly to bring in Probus.
The Grenadiers added a pair of runs in the third and fifth innings to run-rule the Eagles. In the third, Emily Gray hit an RBI triple to bring in Justice Kline who had doubled. Gray scored on an RBI single from Klosterman.
Emily Weiss led off the fifth with a single and Sydney Seger followed with a RBI triple. A sacrifice fly from Klosterman sealed it for the Grenadiers.
Sydney Seger went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Starter Emily Gray went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI.
She cruised through the Eagle lineup allowing just two hits in four innings of work.
IU Southeast hosts Midway Friday at 2 p.m.
