NEW ALBANY, Ind. – A hot shooting second half from the No. 21 University of the Cumberlands sent the Patriots past the Grenadiers 94-84 Saturday despite 35 points from Jamie Johnson.
The game was tight for the majority of the contest as there were 10 ties and 11 lead changes.
Cumberlands (10-2) took a 28-19 lead on a Danny Butt three-pointer with 6:49 to play in the first half but the Grenadiers cut the deficit to 40-34 at halftime.
David Burton had 11 points in the first half to lead IU Southeast.
In the second half, IU Southeast opened the period on a 29-15 run to take 59-55 lead, their largest of the contest, when Burton scored with 13:23 to play.
Foul trouble began to plague IU Southeast as the Patriots were shooting the one-and-one with more than 11 minutes to play in the contest. Cumberlands (Ky.) shot 18-of-24 from the free-throw line in the second half to the Grenadiers' 11-of-14.
IU Southeast took a 76-75 lead after Nick Tinsley got an offensive rebound and putback with 6:26 to play.
The Patriots responded with an 18-9 run to close the game. Cumberlands shot 16-of-22 (73 percent) in the second half from the field which was the difference as IU Southeast could not get a timely defensive stop.
Malik Colvin-Seldon had 24 points to lead Cumberlands. Jahi Hinson had 145 points, Danny Butt had 14 points and three big three-pointers and Austin Bell added 11 points.
David Burton had 22 points and five rebounds before fouling out and Lukas Burkman had 13 points for the Grenadiers.
IU Southeast travels to Lindsey Wilson College Saturday at 6:30 p.m. ET.
