No. 19 Grenadiers Split Doubleheader With Lindenwood-Belleville

BELLEVILLE, Illinois – The No. 19-ranked IU Southeast baseball team split a doubleheader Friday with Lindenwood-Belleville to take two out of the games in the season-opening series for the Grenadiers.

IU Southeast (2-1) shut out the Lynx 7-0 in the first game of the day before falling on a walkoff double 6-5.

In game one, starter Brandon Nylin worked out of multiple jams but did not allow a run in six innings of work. He allowed seven hits and walked one while striking out five.

The Grenadiers broke the game open with a six-run fourth inning. Korbin Williams opened the scoring with a two-run home to right. After Jordan Branz reached base on a dropped third strike, Nolan Rogers singled and Tyler Warmath walked to load the bases; Richard Rodriguez hit a two-run single to right and Warmath scored on an error by the pitcher Cody Bergkamp. Cody Maloon followed with a double to bring in Rodriguez.

IU Southeast added another run in the sixth after Nolan Rogers singled and stole second, third and scored on a RBI groundout from pinch hitter Santrel Farmer.

Nolan Rogers, Josh Beams and Korbin Williams each had two hits for IU Southeast and Rodriguez and Williams each had two RBI.

Freshman Jacob Frankel worked a perfect seventh inning in his first collegiate appearance.

In game two, the Grenadiers fell behind 2-0 after the first inning but cut the lead in half in the top of the second and took the lead with a two-run fourth inning on back-to-back errors by the Lynx.

The Lynx (3-4) took the lead again in the fifth when Aaron Fuller scored on a fielder's choice and Ian Rodriguez came around on a Kellan Murray single.

Nicholas Lugo tied the game in the sixth when he scored on a inside-the-park home run to center.

A sacrifice fly from Cody Maloon scored Warmath who had singled and advanced on a error in the seventh.

But the Lynx tied the game in the eighth when Matt Crook singled, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a RBI single from Cullen Stockley.

In the bottom of the ninth, Jordan Evans led off the inning by being hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a sac bunt. He scored the winning run on a walkoff double by Kellan Murray.

Jonathan Steiner worked the ninth to earn the win. John Cecil took the loss for IU Southeast.

Cody Maloon and Korbin Williams each had two hits in the loss.

The Grenadiers host St. Xavier on Feb. 16 and 17.
