NEW ALBANY, Ind. – A scorching IU Southeast offense, led by Jamie Johnson's career-high 39 points, powered IU Southeast past No. 25 West Virginia Tech 95-82 and into Tuesday night's River States Conference Championship game.
Johnson scored 30 of his 39 points in the first half on 9-of-13 shooting from the field and 6-of-9 shooting from three-point range. Johnson became the 27th Grenadier men's basketball player to record 1,000 career points. He finished 12-of-20 from the field in the game.
Joe Jackson had 17 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and three blocks, and Demetrius Stanton had 16 points and five rebounds.
IU Southeast (23-7) jumped out to a 24-13 lead midway through the first half but the Golden Bears were able to cut the lead to 34-28 with 5:45 to play in the half. WVU Tech was kept in the game in the first half behind the strong outing from Thomas Collins, who scored 18 of his team-high 25 points in the opening 20 minutes.
Jamie Johnson hit a couple of big three-point shots late in the first half to extend the IU Southeast led once again. The Grenadiers led 55-36 at halftime. IU Southeast was 9-of-18 from three-point range in the first half and held WVU Tech to 1-of-7 shooting from behind-the-arc.
West Virginia Tech (20-11) started the second half on a 26-9 run to get back into the game trailing 70-64 with 12 minutes to play. The Grenadiers were sloppy with the ball in the second half, committing 12 turnovers and the Golden Bears scored 19 points off of turnovers in the second half.
IU Southeast was able to stabilize its play and outscore the Golden Bears 25-18 the rest of the way. Kerry Smith hit a left-wing three-pointer with 3:09 to play which gave the Grenadiers a 93-77 lead and put the game away. Smith had all eight of his points in the second half.
IU Southeast will travel to Richmond, Ind. Tuesday night to face No. 2 IU East in the RSC Championship in a rematch of last year's championship game. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
