NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast softball team opened its season on Monday and fell to No. 10 Indiana Wesleyan 8-1 and 3-1.
In game one, the Grenadiers and Wildcats were scoreless through the first four innings. The Grenadiers threatened in the bottom of the fourth when Morgan Keefer singled and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Kaitlyn Flowers. She advanced to third when Lindsey Keen doubled but had to hold at third and was tagged out on the plate on a fielder's choice to end the threat.
In the top of the 5th, the Wildcats led off with back-to-back singles and then a walk. A wild pitch from starter Becca Schoenung brought in the first run. An RBI single from Victoria Boyer followed and a double steal later in the inning plated Boyer to make it 3-0 IWU.
In the top of the 7th, the Wildcats plated five runs behind two errors and a passed ball as the IU Southeast defense broke down.
IU Southeast (0-2) got on the board when freshman Maggie Lubbehusen doubled to right-center to score Kyndyl Olds.
Lubbehusen went 3-for-4 with a RBI in her collegiate debut. Fellow freshman Lindsey Keen also recorded two hits in the loss.
Becca Schoenung had a solid season debut for IU Southeast, working six innings and giving up three runs on three hits. She struck out six and walked three.
In game two, IU Southeast took the lead in the bottom of the first. Kyndyl Olds walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Emily Weiss singled to center to score Olds.
In the third, Kelsey Kooistra bunted and reached second when that base was not covered by the defense. She advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a passed ball from Ashtyn Sharp.
The Wildcats (9-0) took the lead in the fifth and added a run in sixth when Lauren Buckley and Victoria Boyer recorded RBI singles.
Starter Emily Weiss pitched a complete game in the loss for the Grenadiers. She surrendered three runs on six hits. She struck out five and walked three.
Ashtyn Sharp recorded her first collegiate hit in the contest for IU Southeast.
The Grenadiers travel to Oakland City Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. ET.
