Grenadiers Open Conference Play With Sweep of Midway

MIDWAY, Ky. – The IU Southeast softball team opened River States Conference play with 9-6 and 8-2 wins over Midway University on Thursday.

In game one, the Grenadiers got on the board first when Sydney Seger brought in Morgan Keefer on a sacrifice fly.

The Grenadiers (6-8, 2-0 RSC) added five runs in the fifth inning. Justice Kline had a RBI single to score Keefer and Maggie Lubbehusen followed with a RBI double. Ashtyn Sharp followed with a two-run single and Emily Weiss rounded out the inning with a RBI single to right.

The Eagles (6-11, 0-2 RSC) roared back with a six-run bottom of the sixth to tie the game. They were aided by a Grenadier infield that tried to eliminate the lead runner instead of taking the sure outs to extend the inning. Midway had four hits in the inning but only one extra-base hit, a double from Lynsie Clark to start the scoring.

IU Southeast responded with a three-run seventh inning. Sydney Seger singled to cener and Justice Kline followed with a bunt hit. Maggie Lubbehusen singled to score Seger and then Sharp reached on a bunt hit. Emily Weiss and Clara Shean followed with RBI singles.

Midway loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the inning but Weiss was able to induce a grounder to third and get the force out to end the game.

Ashtyn Sharp went 3-for-3 with two RBI and Seger, Weiss, Lubbehusen and Kline all had two hits.

In game two, the Eagles opened the scoring in the bottom of the second. Trista Craigmyle reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and scored on a double by Marissa Walker.

The Grenadiers answered with a four-run third inning. Kyndyl Olds singled to center to bring in Kaitlyn Flowers, who had reached on a walk. Sydney Seger hit a two-run triple off the wall in left to score Baylee Krueger and Olds and Lubbehusen followed with a double.

In the fourth, Baylee Krueger added to the lead with a two-run home run to left, her first collegiate home run, to make it 6-1.

Becca Schoenung worked six and a third innins to earn her second win of the season. She gave up two runs on four hits. She walked six and struck out one.

Kyndyl Olds had three hits and Lubbehusen Weiss and Krueger each had two.

IU Southeast travels to Asbury University Saturday at 2 p.m.
