NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast softball team swept West Virginia Tech 4-3 and 8-4 on Sunday afternoon.
In game one, the Grenadiers took a 3-2 lead in the third inning when Maggie Lubbehusen doubled to center to score Sydney Seger who had reached on a single.
The Golden Bears (7-19, 1-3 RSC) tied the game in the fifth when Kacie Cahill doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly from McKayla Waugh.
West Virginia Tech loaded the bases with one out in the top of the seventh but Becca Schoenung came on in relief of starter Emily Weiss and recorded a strike out and a pop up to get out of the inning.
The Grenadiers (10-10, 6-2 RSC) won on a walk-off suicide squeeze in the bottom of the seventh. Ashtyn Sharp doubled to left and advanced to third on a ground out by Seger. Justice Kline got the bunt down and Sharp scored to win it.
Maggie Lubbehusen went 3-for-3 the win and the first five Grenadier batters recorded at least to hits in the win.
In game two, West Virginia Tech took a 3-0 lead after the first inning. The Grenadiers got two runs back in the bottom of the second when Lindsey Keen singled to right to bring in Lubbehusen and Morgan Keefer.
IU Southeast took the lead in the third when Kyndyl Olds doubled and later scored when Lubbehusen singled to left. Baylee Krueger tripled to right to give the Grenadiers a 4-3 lead.
The Golden Bears tied the game in the fourth when Olivia Morley singled into right to score Karina Atanacio, who had doubled.
The Grenadiers took the lead for good with a three-run fifth inning. Sydney Seger led off with a triple and scored on Lubbehusen's double. Baylee Krueger followed with double to add another run and then she scored on a throwing error by the catcher Lauren Oxford.
Sydney Seger added to the lead in the sixth when she hit her second home run of the season to center.
Becca Schoenung (5-6) picked up her second win of the day by working five innings. She gave up four runs on five hits while walking three and striking out three.
Sydney Seger and Maggie Lubbehusen each had two hits and two RBI in the win. Baylee Krueger and Morgan Keefer each added two hits.
