Grenadiers Open Season With Wins Over Life University and Shawnee State Friday

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The IU Southeast volleyball team earned a pair of wins over tough Mid-South Conference opponents on Friday with a five-set win over Life University (Ga) and a sweep of Shawnee State (Ohio).

IU Southeast (2-0) defeated Life University 25-22, 18-25, 25-19, 21-25, 18-16 in the opening match of the day.

Three Grenadiers had double-figure kills in the match. Alyssa Cosgrove led the way with 15 kills and Parker Andres and Monica Loftus each added 10 kills apiece. Hannah Sipe had 25 assists and Cosgrove added 15.

Freshman Jennie Malone, a Bloomington, Ind. native, had a solid debut with seven kills, a solo block and four block assists in the contest.

After alternating set victories in the first four sets, IU Southeast jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the deciding fifth set. But the Running Eagles came back to tie the set at 14 and eventually took the lead 16-15 for match point.

Sophomore Parker Andres responded with the tying kill and then a block from Alexis Bassett and Lindsey Howell gave the Grenadiers a match point of their own. A ball-handling error from the Eagles sealed the win for IU Southeast.

The Grenadiers defeated Shawnee State 25-19, 25-16, 25-22 in the second match of the day for IU Southeast.

Monica Loftus led the Grenadiers with 12 kills and Cosgrove and Andres each added eight.

With the first set tied at seven, IU Southeast scored 10 of the next 15 points to secure a comfortable advantage. The closest the Bears would get in the remainder of the match was 19-15 but the Grenadiers held them at bay. They were aided by two aces from Hannah Sipe and two kills from Loftus.

IU Southeast managed just five aces in its five-set win over Life but bounced back with 12 in three sets against Shawnee State. Hannah Sipe and Lexie Fisher each had four and Loftus added three.

The Grenadiers conclude the tournament on Saturday vs University of the Cumberlands at 1 p.m. ET followed by Cumberland University at 7 p.m. ET.
