Grenadiers Fall To Asbury University In Five Set Thriller Friday

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – Asbury University narrowly escaped New Albany with a five-set win over IU Southeast on Friday night.

The Eagles (9-7, 1-0 RSC) defeated the Grenadiers 25-15, 14-25, 18-25, 25-20, 15-13.

IU Southeast (12-3, 1-1 RSC) started the match slowly, committing six attack errors in the first set alone but recovered to put together two commanding wins in sets two and three.

In the second set, IU Southeast was aided by three consecutive aces by Alyssa Cosgrove to extend the IU Southeast lead to 9-5. Cosgrove had a match-high six aces for the Grenadiers.

IU Southeast led the set 15-10 but closing the frame on a 10-4 run. Cosgrove ended the set with two-straight aces and had two other kills in the run.

In the third set, IU Southeast led 15-10 before taking a comfortable 20-13 behind the play of Cosgrove and freshman Trinae' Love. Love had 12 kills in the final three sets of the match.

The fourth set was tied at 15 when the Eagles closed the frame on a 10-5 run to send the match to a deciding fifth set.

The final set saw the teams' trade 3-0 runs to open the set. Asbury scored five of the final eight points of the match. Bethany Frye had three kills in the final frame for Asbury.

Alyssa Cosgrove had a match-high 17 kills in the loss. She added six aces and 23 assists. Monica Loftus had 15 kills, Love had 12 and Alexis Bassett added 11.

IU Southeast hosts division leader IU Kokomo Tuesday at 7 p.m.
