Grenadiers Fall In Five Sets To Brescia In Thriller

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – Alyssa Cosgrove had a career-high 24 kills and Alexis Bassett added 16 but it was not enough as IU Southeast fell in five sets to Brescia University on Tuesday. The Grenadiers won the first two sets 25-18, 25-19 before dropping the next three 26-24, 25-22, 15-10.

In the first set, IU Southeast trailed 13-10 before using a 10-4 run to take 20-17 lead that they would not relinquish. Cosgrove and Bassett combined to record half of the Grenadiers' 18 first set kills.

The Grenadiers (20-6, 9-3 RSC) led 10-7 before the Bearcats cut the deficit to 17-16. IU Southeast put the set away with a 8-3 run. Alyssa Cosgrove had two kills in the final seven points including forcing set point. Delaney Nichols won the set with a kill.

The Bearcats (22-6, 11-1 RSC) jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the third set but the Grenadiers were able to tie it but not pull away. There were 10 ties in the third set alone.

IU Southeast led 18-16 after back-to-back kills by Alexis Bassett and Parker Andres but a quick 4-0 run by Brescia put the Bearcats in front for good at 20-18. The Grenadiers would fight off set point three times before falling 26-24 as Natalie Jones had two straight kills.

The fourth set was close throughout as IU Southeast led by only three points and Brescia by five early. IU Southeast led 21-18 after a kill by Cosgrove but Brescia responded with a 7-1 run to send the match to a deciding fifth set.

Brescia led 3-0 before the set was tied at 6. IU Southeast led 9-6 after a kill by Cosgrove before Brescia tied the set at 10. Then a 5-0 run by the Bearcats won the match.

Jennie Malone had eight kills and four blocks for IU Southeast. Hannah Sipe had 56 assists and Kenna Burman had 31 digs to lead the Grenadiers. Alyssa Cosgrove chipped in with 20 digs.

IU Southeast hosts Cincinnati Christian on Senior Night Friday at 7 p.m.
