NEW ALBANY, Ind. – Four Grenadiers scored in double-figures as IU Southeast defeated Simmons College of Kentucky 86-74 on Saturday.
David Burton had 16 points and six assists to lead the Grenadiers. Jared Osborne had 14 points, Tamaje Blackwell had 13 points and six rebounds and Anthony Wales Jr. had 11 points.
The Grenadiers (5-0) had trouble pulling away from the Falcons for much of the first half as there were six ties in the first eight minutes of the contest. But a 16-4 run gave IU Southeast a 33-21 lead with five minutes left in the opening half.
Simmons College cut the lead to 35-35 but a three-pointer by Anthony Wales Jr. and a basket by Kereion Douglas extended the lead to 40-25 at halftime.
In the first half, Jared Osborne hit three three-pointers to help get the offense going for the Grenadiers. He had 11 points to led iU Southeast in the fist half and Blackwell added nine off of the bench.
In the second half, Osborne and Glenn Hill hit two big three-pointers early in the half to put the game out of reach at 51-30.
The Falcons (0-3) found their shooting stroke in the second half and mounted a furious comeback but they could not get closer than 80-69 with under two minutes to play in the contest.
David Burton kept the Falcons at bay as he carried the IU Southeast offense with 16 points in the second half. He was 5-of-7 from the field and 3-of-5 from three-point range.
The Grenadiers shot 52 percent from the field in the second half to help secure the win. IU Southeast also forced 27 turnovers in the contest.
IU Southeast hosts Boyce College Tuesday at 7 p.m.
