Grenadiers Fall Just Short At No. 8 Marian 86-84

INDIANAPOLIS – The IU Southeast men's basketball team battled back from a 13-point deficit and did not take its first lead against No. 8 Marian until three minutes were left in the contest, but a layup by Christian Harvey with five seconds to play won the game for the Knights 86-84 over IU Southeast on Monday.

David Burton led IU Southeast with 22 points and eight rebounds. Jocobi Hendricks had 21 points, Jared Osborne added 12 points, six assists and five rebounds, Tamaje Blackwell had 11 points and six rebounds and Anthony Wales Jr. added 10 points in the loss.

The Grenadiers (11-4) trailed by as many as 13 points in the first half but continued to battle back and cut the lead to single digits. A three-point play by Jared Osborne with 1:30 to play in the first half cut the lead to 39-31.

After Tyrie Johnson completed a three-point play of his own to extend the lead back to double-figures, David Burton hit a three to cut the lead to 44-36 which was the deficit at halftime.

David Burton had nine points in the first half to lead IU Southeast.

The Knights (11-3) kept the Grenadiers at a distance for much of the second half, fighting off run after run by IU Southeast. The Grenadiers finally tied the game at 71 when Hendricks scored off of a layup with 6:41 to play, but the Knights answered right back with a three-pointer.

The Grenadiers finally took the lead with 3:13 to play when Anthony Wales Jr. scored off of a nice outlet pass from Jaivaughn Jackson. But a three-point play from Cameron Wolter and a three-pointer by Nick Rogers gave Marian a 82-77 lead.

Jared Osborne cut the lead to 84-82 with a three-pointer with 37 seconds to play. He followed that with a steal and pass to Anthony Wales Jr. who tied the game with 15.4 seconds to play.

After a Marian timeout, Christian Harvey cut down the lane and got a layup to fall with five seconds to play. IU Southeast would not get a shot off to tie or win on the last possession as the ball was knocked away.

Jocobi Hendricks kept IU Southeast in contest in the second half as he recorded 17 of his 21 points in the second half.

IU Southeast hosts West Virginia Tech Jan. 9 at 7:30 p.m.
