NEW ALBANY, Ind. – Five Grenadiers scored in double figures as IU Southeast withstood a late rally to defeat Asbury 88-83.
David Burton had 19 points and nine rebounds, Jared Osborne added 16 points, Tamaje Blackwell had 15 points and seven rebounds, Jocobi Hendricks had 13 points and Anthony Wales Jr. had 11 points.
A hot shooting first half sent IU Southeast out to 26-16 lead halfway through the opening 20 minutes of play. Asbury (5-7, 0-3 RSC) cut the lead to 37-35. A three-point play by David Burton and a three-pointer by Jared Osborne gave IU Southeast a 45-37 lead at halftime.
Jared Osborne had 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting in the first half. David Burton added 12 points and Blackwell had 11 of his 15 points in the first half.
Asbury used a quick start to the second half to tie the game at 56 with 11 minutes to play. The Grenadiers (8-3, 2-0 RSC) used a 18-5 run to pull away and lead 74-61 with under seven minutes to play.
But the Eagles would not go away and cut the lead to 82-80 with 1:51 to play. David Burton hit a jumper with under a minute to go and after a one-for-two trip to the line for Asbury, Tamaje Blackwell scored after a timeout to increase the lead to 86-81 with 14 seconds left.
After an Asbury basket, Anthony Wales Jr. secured the win with two free throws.
Jocobi Hendricks (13) and Anthony Wales Jr. (11) were the offensive catalysts int eh second hall for the Grenadiers. They combined for 24 of the 43 points scored by the Grenadiers in the second half.
IU Southeast visits the University of the Cumberlands Saturday at 2 p.m.
