Grenadiers Sweep Midway, Weiss Becomes Career Wins Leader

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast softball team extended its winning streak to five straight games by defeating Midway University 6-3 and 5-2 on Friday. In game two, IU Southeast starter Emily Weiss recorded her 45th career win to set a new career wins record at IU Southeast, passing Kayla Duke who pitched at IU Southeast from 2009-2012.

In game one, IU Southeast fell behind when Midway struck first in the top of the second inning. Carson Flynn doubled to score Claire Brandenburg who had reached on a single.

The Grenadiers (11-11, 5-1 RSC) took the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. Kaitlyn Flowers and Baylee Krueger each singled. Then Lindsey Keen singled and Flowers came in to score on the throw. Miranda Miller drew a bases loaded walk to bring in Krueger.

The Eagles (10-14, 2-4 RSC) tied the game in the third but IU Southeast took the lead for good with a three-run bottom of the third.

Maggie Lubbehusen led off with a triple and then Flowers followed with an RBI single. Later in the inning, Lindsey Keen hit a two-run single to center which brought in Flowers and Krueger.

IU Southeast tacked on a run in the sixth when Reecie Gilliam doubled down the left field line to bring in Kyndyl Olds who had singled.

Becca Schoenung (4-5) got the complete game win. She allowed three runs, two earned, on nine hits. She struck out five and walked three.

Kaitlyn Flowers and Baylee Krueger each had two hits and scored two runs and Keen drove in two.

In game two, IU Southeast got on the board first when Kyndyl Olds hit an inside-the-park home run to left for her first home run of the season. The Morgan Keefer singled and later scored on a throwing error by the shortstop Kendall Horn.

Midway got a run back on Mary Andres singled but Weiss was able to limit the damage with a 1-2-3 double play.

The Grenadiers added a pair of runs in the fifth. Maddie Probus and Reecie Gilliam each reached on singles and Probus scored when catcher Mary Andres dropped a throw home after a comebacker to the pitcher. Lindsey Nelson hit a sacrifice fly to right.

Kaitlyn Flowers scored in the sixth after a dropped third strike and passed ball by Andres. The throw went down to second as Flowers was on her way to third and she was able to score.

Emily Weiss (6-5) worked six innings and allowed two runs, one earned. She gave up seven hits and walked one and struck out one.

Kyndyl Olds had two hits in the win.

IU Southeast hosts Asbury Saturday at noon.
