Grenadiers Get Senior Day Sweep of Hanover

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast softball team swept Hanover on Friday, 4-3 in eight innings and 5-1 on Senior Day.

On the final home doubleheader for eight Grenadiers, the seniors made the difference in both contests.

In game one, IU Southeast opened the scoring in third inning when senior Kyndyl Olds scored from second on a throwing error by shortstop Shelby Edington.

Hanover (11-21) answered in the top of the fourth with a pair of runs when Ashley Swearingen singled to bring in two runs.

The Grenadiers (26-22) tied the game in the fifth when Olds tripled and fellow senior Becca Schoenung followed with a single.

Extra innings were needed and Hanover converted with the international tiebreaker when Edington singled to left to score Abby Wilson.

IU Southeast responded in the bottom of the frame when Olds led off with a double to put runners at second and third. Becca Schoenung put down a good bunt and beat the throw to first, Emily Weiss scored from third and Olds beat the throw home from first to win the game.

Senior starter Emily Weiss got the complete-game win. She gave up three runs, one earned on four hits while striking out five.

Olds had three hits and Schoenung had two in the win.

In game two, senior third baseman Justice Kline and Kyndyl Olds had back-to-back singles in the second inning and Kline scored on a fielder's choice later in the inning.

An RBI groundout by senior first baseman Sydney Seger made it 2-0 in the third.

After Hanover cut the lead in half in the sixth, the Grenadiers put the game out of reach with three runs in the bottom of the inning.

Kyndyl Olds singled and advanced to second on a groundout. She would score on a bunt hit by Kaitlyn Flowers. Later in the inning, the trend of seniors coming through on Senior Day continued when senior outfielder Sidney Chumbler hit a two-run single to make it 5-1.

Olds went 3-for-3 in the nightcap.

The Grenadiers conclude the regular season Saturday with a doubleheader at Brescia. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET.
