Grenadiers Sweep Saturday Doubleheader Vs Cumberland (Tenn.) and Shawnee State

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The IU Southeast volleyball team capped off a 3-1 weekend at the Vette City Volleyball Classic with a four-set victory over Cumberland (Tenn.) and a sweep of Shawnee State Saturday.

In the first match of the day, the Grenadiers defeated Cumberland 25-23, 25-21, 20-25, 25-21. IU Southeast (3-1) used a 7-0 run in the first set to take a 16-5 lead. But the Phoenix responded with a 14-3 run to tie the set at 19. Jennie Malone had two kills in the final six points for the Grenadiers and Parker Andres secured the first set with a kill.

In the second set, the Grenadiers used a 6-0 run to jump out to an 8-3 lead. Cumberland would cut into the deficit against and get as close as 22-20 before two kills by Andres and Cosgrove and an attack error sent the set to the Grenadiers.

Cumberland (3-4) got back into the match with a 25-20 win in the third set. The Phoenix closed the set by scoring eight of the final 11 points.

In the fourth set, Hannah Sipe helped the Grenadiers jump out to a 6-0 lead with four aces in the run. The set was tied at 19 after another Cumberland comeback, but the Grenadiers scored six of the final eight points to win the match. Lindsey Howell recorded an ace and then two errors by the Phoenix ended the match.

Alyssa Cosgrove had 17 kills for the Grenadiers. Jennie Malone had a career-high 14 and Andres added 10 in the win. Hannah Sipe added 33 assists for IU Southeast.

In the nightcap, the Grenadiers swept Shawnee State 25-23, 25-20, 25-20. The first set saw IU Southeast jump out to a 14-10 lead and extend it to 22-14. The Bears cut the lead to 23-21 but an ace from Jennie Malone and a kill from Hannah Sipe gave the first to the Grenadiers.

In the second set, IU Southeast led 20-13 and then 24-15 before a brief Shawnee State rally prolonged the frame. Parker Andres ended it with a kill and a 25-20 second set win.

The third set was close early until IU Southeast went on a 9-1 run to take a 18-9 lead. Parker Andres had four kills in the run. The Grenadiers kept Shawnee State at a comfortable distance for the reminder of the match.

Alyssa Cosgrove led the Grenadiers with 11 kills, Parker Andres added eight and Lindsey Howell had six.

IU Southeast will host Goshen College Friday at 7 p.m. in the 2019 home opener for the Grenadiers.
