Grenadiers Start Slowly, Roll Past Midway Friday

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast volleyball team overcame a slow start to sweep Midway University 29-27, 25-10, 25-21 on Friday.

A balanced offensive attack led the Grenadiers to the victory as five Grenadiers had six or more kills in the match. Alexis Bassett led IU Southeast with nine kills, Alyssa Cosgrove and Parker Andres each had eight and Lindsey Howell and Jennie Malone each had six.

In the first set, IU Southeast led 14-10 before Midway came back to tie the set at 17. The Eagles (6-6, 0-1 RSC) forced set point with at 24-22 after a kill by Alysha Tullar. But IU Southeast answered with a set tying kill by Howell after an Eagle service error

The set would go back-and-forth with multiple set points for each team. A service error by Midway tied the set at 27, then an attack error forced set point for IU Southeast. A kill from Jennie Malone gave IU Southeast the first set.

The second set was a different story as IU Southeast jumped out to a 6-0 advantage behind the serve of Hannah Sipe, who had three aces in the run. IU Southeast led 14-4 and 20-8 before closing out the set 25-10.

In the third set, IU Southeast led 16-10 but the Eagles cut into the lead at 18-15. IU Southeast led the Eagles by at least three points for the remainder of the match. Alexis Bassett had two key kills down the stretch to preserve the lead.

Hannah Sipe had four aces, Alyssa Cosgrove added three aces and two blocks and Brookelyn Clark had two aces in the win. Alysha Tullar and Brooke Trompler each had 13 kills for Midway.

IU Southeast hosts Asbury University Saturday at noon.
