Grenadiers Split Doubleheader With St. Francis (Ill.)

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast softball team defeated the University of Saint Francis (ill.) 2-1 before falling 6-2 on Sunday.

In game one, Ashtyn Sharp opened the scoring in the bottom of the second when she tripled to center and scored on an error by the shortstop Sam Raspopovich.

In the third inning, Lindsey Nelson led off with a single, advanced to second on a groundout and third on a passed ball. She scored on a single from Brooklyn Gibbs. After another hit by Sharp, Gibbs advanced to second and moved to third on a passed ball. But the inning ended when Maggie Lubbehusen flew out to center.

The Grenadiers (7-1) could not get their offense going for much of the contest and did not threaten again until the sixth inning.

In the top of the inning, Kayla Garcia hit a one-out, solo home run to left for her first home run of the season to cut the lead in half.

IU Southeast tried to answer in the bottom of the inning when Allison Hayes and Madeline Probus drew back-to-back walks, but Kaitlyn Flowers and Nelson each popped out to end the inning.

Brooklyn Gibbs (3-0) sent the Saints down in order in the seventh to secure the win. She got a groundout from Jensen Crenshaw before striking out Maddy Eckberg swinging and Alyssa Moreno looking. She got the complete game win, surrendering one run on three hits. She walked two and struck out six.

Ashtyn Sharp had two hits and an RBI in the wn.

In game two, Bridget McDermott had a RBI single and Danielle Callahan followed with an RBI double to give the Saints a 2-0 in the top of the first. The Saints (1-1) jumped on starter Hannah Ogg for two runs on four hits in the opening inning.

St. Francis added a pair of runs in the sixth and seventh inning to put the game out of reach.

IU Southeast broke up McDermott's no-hitter and began a late rally in the bottom of the seventh. Ellie Jackman doubled to score Probus and Sami Cook hit sacrifice fly to left to score Jackman after she stole third. But that was all the Grenadiers could muster.

McDermott allowed two runs on three hits, she walked two and struck out six. Hannah Ogg (2-1) took her first loss of the season as she allowed two runs on eight hits in five innings.

The Grenadiers host Calumet St. Joseph Friday at 2 p.m.
