Grenadiers Sweep Oakland City 8-0 and 8-2 on Sunday

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast softball team got back on the winning track with a doubleheader sweep of Oakland City 8-0 in five innings and 8-2 on Sunday.

In game one, the Grenadiers opened the scoring with a four-run first inning. Ellie Jackman led off with a double, then Kaitlyn Flowers followed with a RBI double. Later in the inning, Ashtyn Sharp singled to score Flowers. Lindsey Nelson and Mackenzie Underwood each had RBI singles in the inning to make it 4-0 Grenadiers.

IU Southeast (9-2-1) added another run in the second inning when Flowers singled and stole second and Sharp drove her in with a single.

The Grenadiers ended the contest with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Madeline Probus led off with a singe and stole second. She moved to third on a single by Ashlie Ripperdan.

Lindsey Nelson got down a squeeze play for a base hit to score Probus and a RBI groundout by Underwood scored Ripperdan. Madison Wilcox got her first collegiate hit on a RBI double to end the game.

Hannah Ogg (3-1) got the complete-game three-hit shutout. She walked a batter and struck out three. Ashtyn Sharp and Lindsey Nelson each had two hits and drove in two.

In game two, IU Southeast scored a pair of runs in each of the first two innings. Brooklyn Gibbs led off with a walk and stole second. Dallas Henderson followed with a RBI single to left to score Gibbs and Henderson scored on a RBI single by Graci Cornett.

In the second inning, Kasey Pearson hit a one-out double to center and scored on a single by Ysa Fox. Fox stole second and scored on a two-out RBI single by Kelsey Warman to extend the lead to 4-0.

Oakland City (2-3) cut the lead in half in the top of the fifth when Ahton Steinbrenner hit a two-run double to left center.

But the Grenadiers answered right back with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Sami Cook doubled to score Cornett who had singled. Lindsey Nelson tripled to right to score Cook and she scored on a wild throw by the right fielder.

Dallas Henderson capped off the scoring in the bottom of the sixth when she singled to score Madison Wilcox from second.

Brooklyn Gibbs (4-0) worked five innings allowing two runs on three hits and a strikeout. Graci Cornett went 3-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI and Dallas Henderson drove in two.

IU Southeast hosts Saint Francis (Ind.) Friday at noon.
