Grenadiers Sweep Alice Lloyd To Open 2020 Season

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast softball team defeated Alice Lloyd College 14-0 in five innings and 7-1 to open the 2020 season on Sunday.

In game one, the Grenadiers opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when Kelsey Warman hit her first home run of the season to right-center field for a 1-0 lead.

The Grenadiers would add a pair of runs in the second inning when Madeline Probus tripled to right to score Ashtyn Sharp who had singled. Probus scored on a RBI groundout by Reecie Gilliam.

IU Southeast (2-0) blew the game open in the bottom of the third with a nine-run barrage. Kaitlyn Flowers singled and stole second and a walk to Warman and single by Maggie Lubbehusen loaded the bases.

Ashtyn Sharp reached on an error by the first baseman which allowed Flowers and pinch runner Madison Wilcox to score. Ellie Jackman followed with a two-run double for her first collegiate hit and another RBI triple by Probus extended the lead to 8-0.

Miranda Miller singled to center to score Probus and Dallas Henderson's first collegiate hit scored Miller. Kaitlyn Flowers and Warman recorded RBI singles to cap off the scoring in the inning.

In the fourth, Grace Carver and Mackenzie Underwood each recorded RBI singles for their first hits at IU Southeast to add to the Grenadier lead.

Hannah Ogg worked three innings surrendering one hit with two strikeout for her first win at IU Southeast. Gabby Mahoney and Morgan Jenks come on in relief and allowed just two hits to combine for the shutout.

Kelsey Warman, Kaitlyn Flowers, Ellie Jackman and Maddie Probus all had two hits in the win and Warman, Jackman and Probus each drove in two.

In game two, the Eagles (0-4) got on the board first when Alyssa Clark singled to center to score Jada Estep.

The Grenadiers answered with a four-run bottom of the first. Maggie Lubbehusen sparked the two-out rally with a leadoff double. Ellie Jackman followed with a RBI single to tie the game. After a Warman single, Katie Cook brought both runners in with single to left for her first collegiate hit. Fellow freshman Allison Hayes followed with her first hit, an RBI double, to score Cook.

Natalie Schapker led off the bottom of the third with her first hit at IU Southeast and Hayes followed with another double. Lindsey Nelson followed with a sacrifice fly to right to score Schapker. Starter Grace Cornett followed with a RBI double for her first collegiate hit.

Cornett worked three innings and gave up two hits and one run while striking out three. Brooklyn Gibbs made her first appearance at IU Southeast in relief working four innings and allowing one hit and a walk.

Maggie Lubbehusen, Allson Hayes and Gracei Cornett each had two hits in the win and Katie Cook drove in two.

IU Southeast travels to Georgetown College Tuesday at 2 p.m.
