Grenadiers Sweep St. Mary-of-the-Woods Wednesday

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – Maggie Lubbehusen had four hits and drove in two runs to help lead IU Southeast to a sweep of St. Mary-of-the-Woods 4-3 and 5-3 on Wednesday.

In game one, the Grenadiers struck for a pair of runs in each of the first two innings. In the bottom of the first, Lubbehusen doubled down the left-field line to score Kaitlyn Flowers who had reached on a single. After Graci Cornett grounded out to short, Maddie Probus advanced to third and scored after a missed catch by the third baseman Lyrice Krause as the Pomeroys were trying to tag out Probus as she advanced to third.

In the second inning, Miranda Miler singled to drive in Kesley Warman who had reached on an error and advanced to third on a bunt base hit by Reecie Gilliam. Later in the inning, Brooklyn Gibbs singled to center to score Miller to make it 4-0 Grenadiers.

The Pomeroys (0-4) got a pair of runs back in the top of the third when starter Katelynn Kennedy helped her own cause with a two-run single to center.

IU Southeast starter Brooklyn Gibbs battled for her sixth win of the season, working five innings and surrendering three runs on three hits while walking five and striking out one. Graci Cornett worked two perfect innings for her first save of the season.

Lubbehusen went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Kaitlyn Flowers and Reecie Gilliam each had two hits.

In game two, the Pomeroys opened the scoring in the top of the second when Ariel Spivey doubled to left and was driven in on RBI single down the third-base line by Brooke Coffing.

The Grenadiers (13-2-1) answered with a three-run bottom of the inning. Maddie Probus, Natalie Schapker and Lindsey Nelson led off with singles to load the bases. Sami Cook brought in Probus on a fielder's choice and Ashtyn Sharp tripled to left to clear the bases.

IU Southeast added a pair of runs in the third. Kelsey Warman led off with a walk and socred on a double by Lubbehsuen. A RBI single by Schapker brought in Lubbehusen.

The Pomeroys could not find an answer for starter Hannah Ogg who worked six innings and allowed one run on three hits and she struck out eight.

In the seventh, the Pomeroys cut in the defcifit with a pair of unearned runs but the Grenadiers held on for a 5-3 win.

Natalie Schapker was 3-for-3 with a RBI and Lindsey Nelson had a pair of hits in the win.

IU Southeast hosts Huntington Friday at 1 p.m.
