Box Score NEW ALBANY, Ind. – A balanced IU Southeast attack helped lead the Grenadiers to a season-opening sweep of Oakland City 25-13, 25-16, 25-16 on Thursday.
Alexis Bassett led IU Southeast with eight kills. Jennie Malone and Delaney Nichols each added seven kills and Emilee Organ added six in her collegiate debut.
The Grenadiers (1-0, 1-0 RSC) jumped out to a 10-6 lead and then used a a 10-1 run to put the frame out of reach. Jennie Malone had three kills during that stretch and the Grenadiers were aided by four Oakland City attack errors. The Grenadiers held Oakland City to just two kills in the first set.
In the second set, the Grenadiers and Mighty Oaks battled back and forth with IU Southeast taking a 10-6 lead. Then Delaney Nichols and Emilee Organ sparked a 10-4 run with Nichols and Organ combining to record five of the ten points.
Alexis Bassett put the set away with a kill.
In the third set IU Southeast kept Oakland City at bay by using another quick start. They led 7-2 before Oakland City cut the deficit to 9-6. The Grenadiers answered by scoring 12 of the next 17 points to take a 21-11 lead. Emilee Organ recorded four of her six kills in the final set and she ended her first collegiate match with the winning kill.
The Grenadiers had nine aces in the match with Kenna Burman leading with three. She also added 13 digs.
IU Southeast hosts Asbury University Sept. 25 at 7 p.m.
