NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast softball team used two dominant pitching performances and some timely hitting to sweep Grace College 8-0 and 2-0 on Friday in the 2021 home opener for the Grenadiers.
In game one, the Grenadiers struck early when Brooklyn Gibbs hit an inside-the-park home run to right field. She hit four-straight home runs in consecutive at-bats.
IU Southeast (4-0) blew the game open with a five-run third inning. Brooklyn Gibbs drew a walk and stole second then scored on a RBI single by Dallas Henderson. Ellie Jackman and Kelsey Warman followed with singles and Warman drove in a run. Then Kaitlyn Flowers tripled to right-center to clear the bases and extended the lead to 5-0. Madeline Probus grounded out to bring in Flowers and cap off the inning.
Hannah Ogg retired the side in order in the fourth and the Grenadier bats added two more runs in the bottom of the inning. Reecie Gilliam led off with a double and scored on a double by Gibbs. Later in the inning, Dallas Henderson reached base on an error and Katie Templeman scored.
Hannah Ogg (2-0) recorded a complete-game two-hit shutout. She did not walk a batter and struck out six.
Brooklyn Gibbs went 2-for-2, scored two runs and drove in two. Dallas Henderson had two hits and drove in two and Kaitlyn Flowers was 1-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI.
Game two was a pitcher's duel. IU Southeast scratched across two runs in the bottom of the third. Brooklyn Gibbs singled and later scored on a RBI single by Warman. Kaitlyn Flowers came through again with a RBI single to left.
That was more than enough for Gibbs who allowed two hits in seven innings. She walked a batter and struck out three and retired the final five batters in order.
