NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The No. 22-ranked IU Southeast softball team fell 3-2 to Calumet College of St. Joseph before rallying for a 7-6 win in the nightcap.
In game one, the Grenadiers tied the game in the bottom of the first when Dallas Henderson scored from first when Hannah Gentry did not catch a throw at first base and it went into the dugout.
The Crimson Wave (4-20) added a run each in the sixth and seventh innings. In the sixth, Sarah Kessler singled to score Cayla Rokosz. In the seventh, Grace Elrod singled to score Gentry who had singled and advanced to second on an error.
The Grenadiers (19-7) had the winning run on base in the bottom of the seventh as they tried to rally. Lindsey Nelson reached base on a dropped third strike. She advanced to second on a single by Macie Zink and scored on a fielder's choice. Reecie Gilliam struck out to end the game.
Gabby Mahoney worked five innings and gave up one unearned run. She allowed three hits and walked two while striking out one for a no-decision. Macie Zink was 2-for-3.
In game two, the Grenadiers took a 1-0 lead after the first inning. Macie Zink and Kelsey Warman each had singles and Madeline Probus knocked in Zink with a RBI single.
The Crimson Wave took the lead with three runs in the third inning. Tiffanie Brieno hit a two-run home run to left, her first of the season, and Grace Elrod drew a bases loaded walk to score Gentry.
IU Southeast answered right back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the frame. Ashtyn Sharp singled, advanced on a passed ball and scored on a single by Henderson. Ellie Jackman doubled to center to score Henderson and Probus and give the Grenadiers the lead.
The Crimson Wave scored once in the fourth and twice in the fifth to take a 6-4 lead, but the Grenadiers pulled within one when Lindsey Nelson hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth to score Probus.
That set the stage for the bottom of the seventh inning. Ellie Jackman singled to short and advanced to second on a throwing error and Nelson reached base on a error by second baseman Alex Navarro. Nelson stole second to put both runners in scoring position.
Kaitlyn Flowers pinch hit for Katie Templeman and tried to bunt, then she pulled the bat back and sent a single to left for a walkoff victory.
Hannah Ogg (12-4) got the win in relief. She worked two and two thirds innings and gave up five hits while striking out three.
Ellie Jackman was 4-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI. Ashtyn Sharp and Dallas Henderson each had two hits and scored once. Madeline Probus was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a RBI.
IU Southeast hosts Thomas More Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.
