Box Score MIDWAY, Ky. – The IU Southeast volleyball team fell 22-25, 33-31, 25-19, 25-18 to Midway University on Friday.
The Grenadiers trailed in the first set 20-17 but an 8-2 run got them out in front early with a first-set win. A block by Alexis Franks and Ella Brooks tied the set at 21. After an IU Southeast attack error, the Grenadiers capitalized on a service error and a kill by Jessi Kramer to take the lead.
Back-to-back blocks by Franks and Kramer won the set for the Grenadiers.
In the second set, IU Southeast trailed 10-6 before pulling to within one at 13-12. After the Eagles expanded their lead to 17-13, IU Southeast used a 7-0 run to take a 20-17 lead and looked in prime position for a two-set lead.
Kills by Maggie Purichia and Abby Ruzanka were sandwiched around five Midway attack errors.
Another attack error pushed the Grenadier lead to 21-19 but Midway forced another tie.
The teams traded chances and had nine combined set points between them before Midway won the set on an ace.
In the third set, led 6-5 after a kill by Purichia but the Eagles answered with a 6-1 run to take a lead that they would not relinquish. IU Southeast cut the deficit to 12-11 but Midway pulled away with an 8-2 run.
The fourth set was tied at 10 but the Eagles scored six unanswered to take the lead for good. A late rally by the Grenadiers cut the lead to 22-17 on a kill by Gabby Maher but Midway scored three of the final four points to win the match.
Jessi Kramer led IU Southeast with 14 kills and Ella Brooks added 13. Alexis Franks had six and Abigail Vogel and Maggie Purichia each had five.
Alexis Franks led the Grenadiers with four total blocks and Averee Yoder had team-highs with 16 digs and three aces. Cate Murphy had 23 assists and Hannah Brown added 15.
IU Southeast hosts Brescia Saturday at noon on Senior Day. Admission is free as part of IUSFest.
