Box Score 2 COLUMBUS, Ga. - The IU Southeast softball team defeated Lawrence Tech 4-2 before falling to No. 15 Freed-Hardeman 4-0 on day one of the NFCA NAIA Leadoff Classic on Friday.
The Grenadiers scored first against Lawrence Tech in the second inning when Katie Cook reached base on an error after the center fielder dropped a fly ball, Katie Templeman was able to score on the play.
IU Southeast (2-4) doubled their lead after a pair of stolen bases by Rebecca Brosmer placed her at third and Hayling McFarling hit a shot up the middle to drive her in. Later in the inning, Ellie Jackman hit a two-run single to center to score Brooklyn Gibbs and McFarling.
Starter Meghan Waggoner was able to thwart a late rally by LTU in the seventh to earn her second win of the season. She allowed two runs on three hits while striking out eight. Ellie Jackman had two hits and two RBI in the win.
In the nightcap, the Lions took a 2-0 lead when Cassie Hayes homered to left in the fourth. In the bottom of the inning, Ellie Jackman singled and stole second but was stranded there as the Grenadier offense struggled to move runners.
IU Southeast threatened with runners at first and second in the sixth after singles by Gibbs and Macie Zink but a strikeout ended the inning. Dallas Henderson had two of the five IU Southeast hits in the loss.
IU Southeast will face No. 11 Georgia Gwinnett and No. 10 Campbellsville on Saturday.
