Box Score COLUMBUS, Ga. – The IU Southeast softball team lead after four innings but could not hold on as they fell 10-4 to No. 22 University of the Cumberlands at NFCA NAIA Leadoff Classic.
The Patriots (11-4) opened the scoring with a three-run first inning with two RBI singles and a fielder's choice bringing in the runs.
The Grenadiers (2-7) tied the game in the third when Ellie Jackman singled to bring in Katie Templeman. Erin Templeman drove in Lindsey Nelson with a single to right and Macie Zink capped off the rally with a RBI double.
Starter Hannah Nunemaker retired the side in order in the bottom of the inning and the Grenadiers took the lead in the fourth.
After a single and a hit batter, Lindsey Nelson came through with a two-out RBI double to bring in Emilee Edwards. Ellie Jackman flew out to deep left to end the inning.
The Patriots took the lead for good in the fifth. A RBI single by Maddie Sickau tied the game. A squeeze bunt by Emily Bryant was successful, Katie Cheeseman slid in ahead of the throw which was wild and allowed a second run to score.
Hailey Wood followed with a two-run home run.
Lindsey Nelson led off the seventh with a walk but the next two batters were retired. Macie Zink singled to center but a groundout ended the rally and the game.
Macie Zink had two hits and a RBI in the loss.
IU Southeast hosts Georgetown Tuesday at 2 p.m.
