OAKLAND CITY, Ind. – The IU Southeast softball team opened conference play with a sweep of Oakland City 6-4 and 15-5 on Wedneday.

In game one, Macie Zink staked the Grenadiers to an early lead when she hit a solo home run to left in the top of the first inning, her second of the season.

In the fourth inning, the Grenadiers added a pair of runs to extend the lead. With two outs and Zink on second, Brooklyn Gibbs singled to center to drive in Zink and she moved to second on the throw. A ground-rule double by Katie Cook knocked in Gibbs.

IU Southeast starter Meghan Waggoner cruised until the fifth inning. She had not allowed a hit until the fifth. After a leadoff walk, she struck out the next two batters.

Then a bunt single and a hit batter loaded the bases. Another hit batter and a two-run single by Emily Fitzwater tied the game.

Gabby Mahoney came on in relief and allowed a RBI single to center by Megan Ghrist as Oakland City took a 4-3 lead. She got the final out of the inning to keep the game within reach.

In the sixth, Erin Templeman led off with a single and moved to second after an error allowed Hannah Nunemaker to reach. A sacrifice bunt by Miranda Miller put both runners into scoring position and Cook drove them in with her second double of the day.

A single and a walk loaded the baess and Lindsey Nelson was hit to drive in Cook.

Oakland City got a runner at second after a single and a throwing error but Mahoney retired the next three batters she faced to end the inning.

Brooklyn Gibbs came on in the seventh and retired the side in order for her first save.

Katie Cook was 2-for-3 with three RBI in the win.

In game two, the Grenadiers fell behind 3-0 after an inning but outscored the Mighty Oaks 15-2 for the remainder of the game.

Brooklyn Gibbs hit a sacrifice fly to score Hannah Nunemaker from third in the top of the second inning.

Ellie Jackman tied the game in the third when she hit a two-run home run to center to drive in Lindsey Nelson, who had walked.

That sparked an eight-run inning for IU Southeast. After the Jackman home run, Zink doubled and scored on a Nunemaker RBI single. Brooklyn Gibbs, Dallas Henderson and Hayley McFarling each drew consecutive bases-loaded walks and a throwing error by the shortstop allowed two more runs to score.

The Grenadiers added six more runs in the fourth. Ysa Fox had a RBI single to center to score Gibbs and Lindsey Nelson followed with a RBI double. A two-run single by Jackman followed.

Hannah Nunemaker (2-1) got the complete-game win. She allowed five runs, four earned, on seven hits while walking one and striking out a pair.
