Grenadiers Split Doubleheader With Georgetown

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The IU Southeast softball team fell to Georgetown 2-0 before winning the nightcap 7-1 on Tuesday.

In game one, both offenses had chances to score early in the contest but both starters were able to work out of jams.

The Tigers (5-5) had runners at second and third with one out but starter Meghan Waggoner struck out the next two batters she faced to end the inning.

In the bottom of the third, IU Southeast had runners at first and second with two out but a pop out ended the threat.

The best chances for the Grenadiers were in the fifth and sixth innings. Hayley McFarling singled to put runners on first and second with two outs but a pop out ended the inning in the fifth.

In the sixth, Macie Zink doubled and Erin Templeman singled, a fielder's choice got the second out for the Tigers.

Katie Cook singled to load the bases with two out but a pop out ended the threat.

Maria Fratangelo hit a two-run home run to right-center give the Tigers the lead in the seventh.

The Grenadiers (3-8) got the tying runs on base with two out in the bottom of the inning but a groundout ended the game.

Sarah Claxon got the complete-game shutout, allowing seven hits in the game. The Grenadiers left 10 runners on base.

In the nightcap, IU Southeast got on the board in the fourth when Katie Templeman singled up the middle to drive in Katie Cook who had drawn a walk and moved to second on Dallas Henderson's single.

IU Southeast loaded the bases with no one out when McFarling singled. But a lineout, strikeout and fly out limited the damage to one run.

The Grenadiers blew the game open with a four-run fifth inning. A single by Erin Templeman and a double by Hannah Nunemaker put runners at second and third.

Meghan Waggoner reached on a fielder's choice to drive in Rebecca Brosmer and a wild throw at second allowed Nunemaker to score.

Hayley McFarling doubled to drive in Waggoner and a groundout by Lindsey Nelson scored Katie Templeman.

The Grenadiers tacked on a pair of runs in the sixth when Nunemaker singled to score Zink. Then Waggoner drove in Nunemaker with a single.

Hannah Nunemaker worked all seven innings allowing one unearned run on two hits, she walked one and struck out two.

Hannah Nunemaker and Hayley McFarling each had two hits and a RBI and Waggoner drove in two.

IU Southeast hosts Huntington University on March 11.
